Sydney University Cricket Club has taken an early lead in the Club Championship with another strong round, against Manly-Warringah, in the Sydney grade competition.

First Grade eked out a six-run win over the North Head boys at Manly Oval, while Sydney University Second Grade pulled off a five-run win at St Paul’s College Oval.

Sydney University Thirds collected a bonus point with their 180-run win at Graham Reserve, while Fourths collected the points with a four-run win at Camperdown Oval.

Fifth Grade went down by eight runs at Mike Pawley Oval and the Metropolitan Cup side dipped out by five wickets to Mosman at St Andrew’s College Oval on Sunday.

Sydney University Firsts made it back-to-back wins in the first two rounds of the Belvidere Cup competition.

Having won the toss and batted at Manly Oval, the Students posted a solid 8-241 off their 50 overs, with Will Hay (56), Ryan Carters (56), Jonte Pattison (32) and Greg Mail (25) the main contributors.

Opener Hay and No.3 Carters put on a 107-run first wicket partnership, while Pattison once again contributed down the order with his 32 coming off 33 deliveries.

NSW off-spinner Stephen O’Keefe produced a miserly 2-31 off his 10 overs.

Manly-Warringah were 5-84 before Jay Lenton (113 not out) and James Munting (48) turned the game around with a 136-run fifth-wicket stand that put victory within their grasp. Lenton’s runs came off just 97 deliveries and included 12 boundaries and two sixes, while Munting hit seven boundaries and six in his 66-ball stay.

When Tim Ley bowled him and then cleaned up No.9 Nick McLachlan for a duck, the hosts were still 21 runs shy of the target. Lenton’s big hitting took them to within six runs of victory in a nail-biting finish.

Round three of the competition will be the first of the two-day matches, with Sydney University taking on Randwick-Petersham at No.1 Oval on October 10 and 17.

The second round of the Sydney women’s grade competition will be played this Sunday, with Universities First Grade taking on St George-Sutherland at Glenn McGrath Oval.
