Sydney University’s first innings win over Parramatta, in their two-day match at University Oval on the weekend, keeps them at the top of the Sydney Premier Grade competition ladder with three rounds of the competition proper to be played.
The eighth win on the trot for the Students was built around a solid 85 from No.3 Damien Mortimer, who top-scored with a patient 85 in Sydney University’s 8(dec)-296, after they had won the tossed and chosen first use of the campus deck.
Mortimer hit eight boundaries in his 200-ball knock and shared stands of 76 win Ben Trevor-Jones (41) and 69 with Ashton May (25). Hayden Kerr (42 not out) and Greg Mail (35) provided a solid middle order, while Devlin Malone came in at No.10 and cracked 34 off 38 deliveries.
Ben Martin was the pick of the visiting bowlers, collecting 6-89 off his 29 overs.
The Students then rolled Parramatta for 130, with leg-spinner Malone collecting 3-47 from his 17 overs. He also affected a run-out to contribute to the win.
The Students have two-day matches against Randwick-Petersham at Coogee Oval on February 11-18 and Fairfield-Liverpool at University Oval on February 25-March 4, and a 50-over match against Bankstown at Bankstown Memorial Oval on March 11 to round out the competition proper.
But the minor premiership and Club Championship could go down to the wire in yet another tough Sydney grade competition.
Sydney University lead the way on 61 points, with Gordon (55), Bankstown (50), Sydney (48), Penrith (47) and Randwick-Petersham (43) making up the top six.
Penrith lead the Club Championship of 1165 points, with Northern District ((1161), Sydney (1125) and Sydney University (1111) all in contention.
Points in the Club Championship are allocated on the following basis: First Grade 6, Second Grade 5, Third Grade 4, Fourth Grade 3, Fifth Grade 2, Poidevin-Gray Shield 4 and A.W. Green Shield 3.
The Students lead First and Third grades and are running sixth in the Poidevin-Gray Shield, but they’ll need to also pick up points in Second, Fourth and Fifth grades to be a threat the Club Championship.
