Lightning and heavy rain thwarted Sydney University’s chances of pushing for valuable Club Championship points when their Round 13 match against Randwick-Petersham was abandoned mid-afternoon on Saturday.

The Students were 0-28 in reply to Randwick-Petersham’s 7-229 off 50 overs when the heavens went awry over Coogee Oval.

With NSW openers Ed Cowan (19) and Nick Larkin (8) at the crease with 10 overs under their belts and former NSW opener Greg Mail padded up in the stands, a win would have been handy on two fronts.

With two rounds of the competition proper to be played, the potential points would have allowed the Students to edge closer to the Club Championship. Sydney head the coveted award on 1231 points, with Northern District (1200) and Sydney University (1186) in dogged pursuit.

And the loss of potential points saw Gordon – first innings winners over Northern District – join Sydney University on 61 points at the top of the First Grade Belvidere Cup ladder, with a minor premiership on the line. Bankstown (57), Sydney (54), Parramatta (47) and Penrith (47) make up the top six.

Sydney University’s final two matches of the competition proper include a two-day match against Fairfield-Liverpool at Sydney University Oval on February 25 and March 4, and a 50-over match against Bankstown at Bankstown Memorial Oval on March 11.

The qualifying finals will be two-day matches on March 18-19.

Sydney University’s Second, Third and Fourth grades helped the Club Championship tally with first innings wins at the weekend, with Fourths towelling the Randy-Petes by six wickets and a bonus point to boot.

The two nail-biters at the weekend were in the quarter-final of the Poidevin-Gray Shield, where Parramatta edged out Sydney University by a wicket, with five balls to spare, at Old King’s Oval, and the Metropolitan Cup match at Beauchamp Oval, where Gordon triumphed by two runs over the Students.
