Sydney University’s five grade cricket teams will be chasing runs when the first round of two-day matches, against Randwick-Petersham, resumes on Saturday, with Firsts looking at a 300-plus target to secure first innings points.

Randwick-Petersham Firsts decided to take first use of the Sydney University No.1 Oval wicket when they won the toss and duly batted out the day to finish 8-306 off 96 overs.

Jake Scicluna, batting at No.4, provided the backbone of the solid total, crafting 106 off 171 deliveries, including 17 boundaries, before Nigel Cowell trapped him lbw.

Soumil Chhibber (63) and Nathan Price (56) helped to keep the scoreboard ticking over, while Cowell finished with 5-71 off 22 overs.

Randy-Pete skipper Adam Semple will probably be guided by the weather conditions in deciding whether to push on with the bat or turn to his bowling armoury come Saturday. Either way, the Students will be chasing a competitive tally.

And it’s the same story down the grades. Sydney University Seconds were 1-18 at stumps in reply to Randwick-Petersham’s 229 at Coogee Oval; Thirds will be chasing down 258 to secure first innings points; Fourths will be chasing 227; while Fifths are in trouble at 3-10 in reply to Randwick-Petersham’s 210.

Sydney University’s Metropolitan Cup side were skittled for 201, despite the efforts of Patrick Carfax (75) and Tom Hamblin (47), with Randwick-Petersham Gold 0-10 in reply.

Meanwhile, Universities women’s First Grade XI easily accounted by St George-Sutherland in their Round 2 limited overs encounter at Glenn McGrath Oval on Sunday.

Serena Liu (67), Qanita Jalil (49) and Maisy Gibson (33) helped the Students to 5-221 in reply to St George-Sutherland’s 6-220 off 50 overs.

Gibson turned in a fine all-round performance by snaring 2-34, while opener Cailyn Fountain was the star off the losing team, cracking 103 not out off 136 deliveries, including nine boundaries.

Parramatta Seconds collected the points against Universities Seconds at Merryland Oval, where they amassed 8-241 off 50 overs before rumbling the visitors for 191 off 49.1 overs.
