Sydney University’s tail came to the rescue on the first day of the Round 12 match against St George at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

Having lost the toss and been invited to bat, Sydney University were 7-82 before Australian Under 19 leg-spinner Jonte Pattison, wicket-keeper Ben Trevor-Jones and NSW off-spinner Will Somerville came to the rescue.

Pattison and former Bathurst boy Trevor-Jones put on a ninth-wicket stand of 122, with Somerville adding a 15-run cameo at the end to push the Students to 233.

Pattison’s 82 off 156 deliveries included 10 boundaries, while Trevor-Jones’s 57 off 147 balls included five boundaries.

St George were 15 without loss at stumps. Both teams face an intriguing second day, with Sydney University lying ninth on the ladder and desperately in need of wins to defend the Belvidere Cup, and St George lying 13th and even more desperate to secure a place in the final six.

It could come down to Pattison and Somerville coming to rescue – with the ball. Or paceman Ben Joy living up to his name with a big day out.

In a day of low scores, Sydney University are competitively placed in Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth grades, while the Metropolitan Cup boys will need quick wickets on Saturday to defend their first innings tally of 164.

Meanwhile, Alex Blackwell continued her run-laden season with 77 not out in Universities limited overs win over Bankstown in their Round 6 Sydney Women’s grade match at the Village Green.

Universities rattled up 5-260 (Rachel Haynes 69, Georgia Redmayne 51) off their 50 overs, before dismissing Bankstown for 173 for a comfortable result.

Universities remain unbeaten at the top of the women’s competition ladder on 40 points, with Bankstown (25), Northern District (24) and Campbelltown-Camden (19) making up the top four.
