Middle order batsman Ryan McElduff top-scored in both innings as Sydney University gained outright points over Penrith in their Round 12 NSW Premier Cricket clash at University Oval on Saturday and Sunday.

McElduff scored 43 in Sydney University’s first innings of 146 in reply to Penrith’s 121. The Students then rolled the visitors for 155 in their second innings, leaving themselves chasing131 for outright points. McElduff backed up with 65 in a tense afternoon as Sydney University lost eight wickets in reaching the target.

His first innings was a patient display with the 43 including four boundaries off 119 deliveries. In contrast, his second innings was a whirlwind affair. Entering the fray at 3-18 and time running out, he cracked nine boundaries and a pair of sixes, with his 65 coming off 47 deliveries.

The Students also produced some fine bowling performances with Joe Kershaw collecting 6-45 in Penrith’s first innings. He backed that up with 3-38 in the second innings, with Dugald Holloway chipping in with 5-44.

The 10 points for the outright win extended Sydney University’s lead in the NSW Premier Cricket competition, while Penrith dropped to third.

Sydney University head the competition on 61 points, with UTS North Sydney (49), Penrith (47), Sydney (44), Parramatta (43) and Gordon (43) making up the top six.

The Students also head the Club Championship on 1312 points, with Penrith (1015) and Parramatta (1010) the closest rivals.
