The Faculty of
Education and Social Work retained the hotly-contested Emily Small Shield as
the champions of the annual Interfaculty Sport competition for 2008.
Education held off a
spirited Faculty of Vet Science to retain their title from 2007, when they
ended Medicines two-year reign. They finished on 111 points for 2008, 16 ahead
of Vet Science and 62 ahead of third place, the Faculty of Economics and
Business, on 49 points.
The final event of the
year was the 5km run, held on Wednesday, with Michael Harrison (Engineering)
and Lee Winer (Vet Science) winning the mens and womens races respectively. Despite
Lee Winers victory for Vet Science, it wasnt enough to rein in Educations
lead, whose competitors decided to compete in the run in their swimwear to suit
the dismal weather.
The Emily Small Shield
was awarded at the end of competition presentation, which also recognised
individual efforts and celebrated the cornerstone values of friendship, fun and
participation which embody the spirit of Interfaculty sport.
Educations Jessica
Graham won the female representative of the year, and Simon Hyatt (Economics
and Business) won the male representative of the year. Competition sponsors
Ralphs Café and the Co-op Bookshop were also present, awarding the prizes to
recipients.
SUSF University
Programs Manager Leonie Lum said it was also encouraging to see some of the faculties
with smaller numbers of participants, such as Science, Agriculture and Health
Sciences, competing on several occasions throughout the year.
The 2009 Interfaculty
Sport competition will begin in Week Three of Semester One with touch football.
There will also be a new, expanded indoor soccer competition, which will run
over two days instead of one.
The annual competition
caters for everybody, offering touch football, soccer, netball, basketball,
cricket, tennis and many more, with mens, womens and mixed teams.
Participation, the
foundation of Interfaculty Sport, is rewarded in the points-scoring system. While
victories are awarded the most points, each team in each category fielded earns
points for their faculty in their competition. Ralphs Café and the Co-op
Bookshop also award vouchers for the first and second place teams in each
event.
Each faculty has a
representative, elected by their peers and responsible for organising
competitors and teams. Those wanting to get involved need only to contact their

Interfaculty Sport is
run by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. It is open to all Sydney University
undergraduates and postgraduates and is FREE to play.
