Sydney Uni Velo rider Lauren Fitzgerald has capped off a strong season, winning the NSW State Road Championships in Marulan on Sunday, September 27.

A stage winner at the Canberra Tour only last week, Fitzgerald broke away from the small women’s field of five on the final lap.

Faced with a testing 10km out and back course with numerous sharp climbs, Fitzgerald managed to put over a minute lead into Bathurst rider and 2014 Roadwoman of the year, Kirsten Howard. Emily Cunningham finished a further two minutes behind to make up the podium.

Coach Andrew Fisher praised the newly crowned women’s elite state champion on her race plan follow-through.

“The complements from the field on her ability to climb are truly matched by her skill in following instructions and measuring her effort,” Fisher said.

Meanwhile, Samuel Burston, also of Sydney Uni Velo, took silver ahead of team mate Edward White in the men’s category.
