The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames have announced five key signings ahead of their 2018/19 WNBL campaign to commence later this year.
Following the announcement of Cheryl Chambers re-signing for an additional two years, the Flames announced Captain Belinda Snell will be returning, along with Tahlia Tupaea, Shanae Greaves, Lara McSpadden, and new recruit, Brittany Smart.
Hailing from Ohio in the USA, Brittany joins the Flames following a stellar three seasons with the Deakin Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL.
Averaging 10.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the competition, the athletic guard injects energy into every aspect of the game.
Prior to her stint with the Boomers, Britt graduated from Cedarville University in Ohio, where she is the all-time leading scorer in not only Yellow Jackets history, but also Ohio women’s college basketball with 3,236 points.
She then played six successful seasons in Europe, before heading to Australia where she joined the Sandringham Sabres for the 2015 SEABL season.
Coach Cheryl Chambers is looking forward to having Britt on board for the 2018/19 season. “We are extremely excited to have Britt join our team. Her work ethic, determination and skill set are second to none & I am really looking forward to working with her.”
In her third stint at the club, Snell returned to Sydney in 2016. She is a highly valued member of the Flames, bringing a wealth of experience and talent to the group.
“I’m really happy to be back with the Flames for next season. I couldn’t see myself finishing my career anywhere else but Sydney,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to working with such a great group of girls again and hopefully we can go one step better than last year.”
The triple Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012) has also represented Australia at three World Championships (2006, 2010, 2014), winning gold in 2006. She has also won three WNBL championships, a WNBA title and a Euroleague title.
This year, she will don the green and gold and represent Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, hoping to claim her second gold medal at the Games (having won in 2006 in Melbourne.)
With Centre/Forward, Lara McSpadden, Shanae Greaves and Tahlia Tupaea recomitting to the Flames – the latter for her seventh consecutive season – the group are looking extremely strong.
