Sydney University Hockey Club’s two premier senior women’s sides will head into this weekend’s grand final qualifying matches confident of progressing, following a win and draw in their respecting preliminary finals last weekend.
The 2nd grade side had a very good 7-1 victory over Baulkham Hills, and will now play Moorebank this Sunday (10.30am). 1st grade drew 1-1 with Esquires, which meant that as minor premiers, Esquires qualified for the Grand Final. The girls played extremely well and were unlucky to not get a result. 1st grade will also play Moorebank in the preliminary final this Sunday (12.30pm).
Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Nina Khoury will be welcomed back into the 1st grade side following her time spent at national camp, which caused her to miss last weekend’s draw. Unfortunately two other players missed last weekend’s finals match, and will also miss the remainder of the finals series. Cara Simpson was unable to play enough regular season games to qualify. More controversially Maya Ferguson, a Sydney University EAP scholarship holder and NSW Under 21’s representative has also been banned from playing because she missed seven games with Glandular Fever.
In other news, Sydney University EAP scholarship athletes Peter Kelly and Nina Khoury have qualified for the top 10 list for their respective premier league best and fairest player awards.
The men’s award is known as the Brian Booth Medal and the women’s award is the Loretta Dorman Medal.
