Ash Hewson has announced her retirement from international rugby union, following a stellar representative career. Hewson finishes up as Australia’s third most capped women’s rugby player, with 21 caps and is also Australia’s highest point scorer.
In line with her announcement, the fullback went out on a high kicking the winning penalty goal, after the golden point siren, for the Waratahs to take out the inaugural Super W Championship.
Waratah’s captain, Hewson, shared the Super W victory with fellow Sydney University Rugby Club teammates Grace Hamilton, Fi Jones, Iliseva Batibasaga, Tasmin Sheppard and Kirrily Laws.
Following the successful Super W league, Rugby Australia made a ground breaking announcement. In an historic moment for Australian rugby, Sydney and Auckland will host back-to-back Bledisloe Cup double headers with the Wallaroos and Wallabies taking on New Zealand in August.
The Wallaroos game against the Black Ferns will be played at ANZ Stadium on August 18. The second match will be played at Eden Park on August 25. The match in Sydney will mark the Wallaroos first test on home soil in a decade and will also mark the 50th international test for the Australian side.
Sydney University Rugby Club’s Grace Hamilton, Fiona Jones and Emily Chancellor have been named in the Buildcorp Wallaroos extended squad.
Hewson will continue to play with the Sydney University Lions this season in the Sydney Women’s Rugby Union Competition. The team will take the field against Campbelltown at 11am this Saturday 5th May at St John’s College Oval.
