Monash University won the overall pointscore at the 2008 Australian University Games, held in Melbourne last week, with co-host, the University of Melbourne, finishing second.

The University of Sydney finished third, with the University of Western Australia (4th) and the University of NSW (5th) making up the top five.

Despite a surge in the team events on the final day, Sydney University couldn’t peg back Monash and Melbourne for the overall title, which they were defending. Sydney University is the most successful university in the history of the Games, having won the Overall Champion title eight times, from 1995-96 and 1999-2003 inclusive, as well as 2007.

In the team events, Sydney University won gold in rugby sevens, softball, women’s judo, men’s tennis, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s water polo.

Silver medals came the university’s way in kendo kyu, men’s volleyball, men’s touch football and ultimate frisbee, while bronze medals were won in men’s judo, swimming, open kendo, women’s volleyball and women’s touch football.

Sydney University finished fourth overall in athletics, netball, women’s hockey, men’s badminton, women’s badminton, men’s hockey and ten pen bowling (division 1), and fifth in women’s tennis, Australian football and ten pin bowling (division 2).

In other sports, Sydney University came sixth in men’s soccer, seventh in mixed touch football and mixed netball, eighth in men’s basketball and lawn bowls (division 1), and ninth in men’s tennis (division 2) and lawn bowls (division 2).

The university was represented by 403 athletes at the 2008 AUGs.
