Jane who is also a Fellow of Senate at the
University of Sydney was presented with her award – in recognition of
her lifetime service to rowing – by Norma Perry, the first female
Director of Rowing NSW.
Jane was surprised but thrilled to be
acknowledged in this way.
“Rusty was coaching when I was rowing
and I benefited greatly from his encouragement and the skills he shared
with many coaches and athletes,” said Jane. “I was very sad when he died
too young in January 1990 during his time coaching at Penrith.”
Jane
has only recently stepped down from her position as president of Sydney
University Women’s Rowing Club after an impressive 24 years in the top
role. “I am now really pleased to be working with our super new
President Bronwen Watson and look forward to our future successes as a
Club.”
She says particular highlights of her tenure as President
include:
- purchasing a boatshed for the Women’s Rowing Club in
Glebe in 1994; - seeing rowers develop as administrators, leaders
and athletes with some winning world championships; - achieving
political and practical wins for rowers on the water such as preventing
the power boat ramp going ahead, obtaining an early morning curfew for
the Dry Boat store and the 4 knot zone in Blackwattle and Rozelle Bays,
and - the fabulous support offered by Sydney University to our
rowers.
Jane received her award alongside a fellow
University of Sydney graduate and blue recipient (1967) Iain Macdonald.
Iain who studied pharmacy at the University also received a lifetime
achievement award for services to rowing.
Under the leadership of
the Dean, Professor Peter Wolnizer, The Faculty of Economics and
Business has been an enthusiastic supporter of NSW rowing for many years
and was the proud major sponsor of the 2009 and 2010 NSW Rowing
Championships.
