Sydney Uni women’s water polo team maintained their unbeaten run and the competition lead in the national league when they ventured west for Round 4 last week.

The Lions accounted for UWA Torpedoes 13-5 at HBF Stadium Aquatic Facility, Perth, on Thursday, backed up with an 11-6 result over Fremantle Marlins at Bicton Pool, Fremantle, on Friday, and returned to Perth on Saturday to annihilate the Torpedoes 17-3.

Keesja Gofers and Matilda Kearns each nested eight goals over the three matches, while Hannah Buckling scored four in the win over Fremantle.

Sydney Uni Lions head the women’s ladder on 40 points after 10 matches (four rounds), with defending premiers Queensland Thunder (31), Fremantle Marlins (23), UTS Balmain Tigers (20), ACU Cronulla Sharks (18) and UNSW Killer Whales (16) making up the top six.

Sydney University’s men’s team posted two from three, opening with a 13-8 win over the Torpedoes on Thursday, suffering a 12-10 loss to Fremantle on Friday, and accounting for the Torpedoes 9-6 on Saturday.

George Ford led the scoring with seven goals over the three games, while Johnno Cotterill netted six times.

The loss to Fremantle saw the Mariners take the competition lead on 33 points (with a game in hand) from Sydney Uni Lions (29). Defending premiers UNSW Wests Magpies (20 with four games in hand), UWA Torpedoes (20 with a game in hand), Drummoyne Devils (18 with four games in hand) and UTS Balmain Tigers (16 with four games in hand) make up the top six.

Round five will see the Lions men’s and Women’s teams host UTS Balmain Tigers at Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney Uni Spots and Aquatic Centre on Thursday (from 7pm) and Sunday (from 2pm).
