Sydney University Rugby League Football Club (SURLFC) have opened their 2019 Sydney Shield campaign with a hard-fought win over the Moorebank Rams at Hammondville Oval, 28 points to 26.

The Lions took advantage of their Round 1 bye and started strong, scoring five tries in the opening half to go the sheds up 26-10 at the break.

The second half proved more challenging with the opposition scoring three unanswered tries with two conversions, leaving the sides locked up at 26 a piece with 10 minutes remaining.

A successful penalty kick in the 70th by Daniel Arahu put the Lions up by two, which ultimately decided the game.

Try scorers for the blue and gold were Corey Jefferys in the 4th minute, Tesimoni Taliauli in the 8th, Jordan Chong Sun, Ben Pointer and Josh Delailoa.

Representing the University in their new stipe, players wore the Club’s sponsors with pride, including new partners, Gladestone Hotel; Dulwich Hill, Ampac Debt Recovery; Ladbrokes and Maxiplast, and long-term major sponsor, Rentfleet and short sponsor, Global Shade.

Congratulations to the team on a great opening win.

The Lions – now in sixth spot on the ladder – will take on the Asquith Magpies (11th place) this Saturday Norford Park, kick off at 3pm.
