Sydney University Women’s 1st Grade have continued to raise the bar, leading from the front they have put daylight between them and 2nd place with 2 rounds still to play in Sydney’s Premier Hockey Competition.
Sitting first at the halfway point of the season the players challenged each other to step up and lift their game to another level, since then they have scored 39 goals and conceded only 4.
SUHC Scholarship holders Nina Khoury and Maddison Rosser have been deadly in front of goals all season and both are only a few shy of 20 each for the season, which is a remarkable achievement, while scholarship holder Rachel Miller has dominated the midfield and led from the front.
“The players are committing weekly to improving their game and the standard of hockey being played is of the highest calibre” said Coach Ben Chiarella.
“We are completely focused on remaining undefeated and working towards our finals campaign. A Minor Premiership feels hollow unless you follow up and win the big one. It would make for a disappointing end to walk away with 2nd place after being the team to beat all year.”
The ladies play Moorebank in the final round game of the season and it’s likely they will play them in the Major Semi and then potentially the Grand Final (if they get there).
We could have a situation where SUHC play Moorebank 3 games in a row if things continue to pan out. Moorebank are a tough finals hardened team, last year’s Premiers and Minor Premiers, they have been building all season and look to be hitting their straps at the right end of the competition.
The quality of hockey that’s going to be played come finals is likely to be as good as you will see anywhere, make sure you get out to Homebush come September to see how far the women can go and cheer them over the line.
