Sydney University Boat Club rower Bronwen Watson justified her decision to come out of retirement when she won a gold medal in the women’s lightweight quad at the 2007 World Championships held in Munich.
Watson teamed with Tara Kelly of Queensland, Alice McNamara of Victoria and Miranda Bennett of NSW to win the lightweight quad scull in 6:35.85 ahead of Germany and Italy. The Australians led from start to finish to win gold.
The win reaped further rewards on Wednesday night when Watson was named Oarswoman of the Year at the annual NSW Rowing Association Presentation Dinner.
Sydney University Rowing and Boat Clubs cleaned up at the annual event, winning a host of awards, including the NSWRA Honours Recipient Trophy for the sixth year.
The Rowing and Boat Clubs also won the Women’s Senior Shield, the Men’s Senior Shield, the Kevin Webb OAM Point Score (NSW Sprint Championships) and the Edward Trickett NSW Grade Championships.
The University finished second in the Women’s Elite Shield, the Men’s Elite Shield, the L.E. Stepto OAM Memorial Shield (Premiership) and the Bohemia Crystal River Cup and third in the Combined Under-20 Shield.
