Premiers off to a good start

All-rounder Liam Robertson opened the 2017-18 season with a boundary-laden century as defending premiers Sydney University defeated Gordon by seven runs in their limited overs clash at Chatswood Oval on Saturday.

Batting at No.4, Robertson cracked six sixes and eight boundaries in compiling 102 off 84 deliveries in the Students 9-297 off 50 overs.

It was his fourth century for the club and took him past 4500 First Grade runs in his ninth season.

Having been sent into bat, University openers Hayden Kerr (86) and Ed Cowan (22) put on 54 in even time, with Kerr cracking nine boundaries and three sixes in his 76-ball stay.

Damien Mortimer came in at No.3 and compiled a patient 57 in a 76-run stand with Kerr and a 101-run partnership with Robertson.

The hosts were 3-51 in reply before Tym Crawford (55) and Elliot Richtor (43) steadied the ship and set up No.9 Charlie Stobo to almost pull off a win for the hosts.

Stobo cracked an unbeaten 71 off 51 deliveries, including five sixes and three boundaries as Gordon came within seven runs of the target.

Sydney University also collected the points in Second, Third and Fourth grades, with Gordon winning the Fifth Grade match at St Paul’s College Oval.

And Sydney University opened the Metropolitan Cup competition with a 10-wicket win over Randwick-Petersham Gold at Alexandria Park on Sunday.
