In a very tactical affair, Sydney Uni Elite Athlete Program scholarship holder Lachlan Renshaw finished fourth in the 800m track event at the New York Diamond League over the weekend.

Conditions were wet and windy, meaning the times weren’t fast. Despite finishing fourth, Renshaw was just 0.8 of a second off winning the event. Finishing in front of him were two former world champions and the current commonwealth champion.

“Lachlan has certainly arrived on the world stage where he does not look at all out of place in this company, and a really big result is just around the corner for the young man,” said Sydney University Athletics Head Coach Dean Gleeson.

Renshaw will now turn his attention to a series of races in Europe in July in the lead up to the World Championships and the World Uni Games.

Fellow Sydney Uni Elite Athlete Program scholarship holder Lara Tamsett won the Adidas Ten, breaking the course record for the event. Tamsett will next race the Launceston Ten in Tasmania this weekend and then the Gold Coast Half Marathon in three weeks time. The race on the Gold Coast will be Lara’s first attempt at the half marathon distance and a stepping stone to future marathons, with the marathon being the event that many experts feel Tamsett could potentially enjoy the most international success in. Tamsett will also use all of these races to enhance her chances of defending her City to Surf crown in early August.

The Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) Men’s team for the Adidas Ten finished fourth in the teams event. The four man team included Ben Liddy, Hugh Williams, Ben Cross and Andrew Heil. It was an excellent result from the team and the best ever team result for SUAC at this event, with all of the SUAC team recording individual personal best times.

On the 6th June Sydney Uni Elite Athlete Program scholarship holder James Nipperess represented Sydney Uni at the Leonora Golden Gift Mile. Held in a mining town in Western Australia, this event is the richest mile road race in the country. Due to the large prize money on offer the race attracts a high quality field, and this year was no exception with a number of high profile men and women’s competitors. Nipperess finished a very credible sixth despite falling on the last corner. The race was won by Australian Olympic rep Mark Fountain.
