The Round 3 Tertiary Cup match between Sydney University Lions and Australian Catholic University was called off early under the ‘mercy rule’ with the Lions having posted 11 tries and hungry for more.

Sydney University were up 58-8 when the match was terminated early in the second half.

Man of the match and Chadwick Scholar, Jake Vrahnos, led the scoring with three tries. Each of them came from penetrating breaks on the right edge with support play from his brother Adam.

The pair will look to continue their great form in representing City next week in the annual City versus Country game.

The Lions have improved their discipline each week and they made few errors on Saturday. Teamed with a solid defensive effort that included a number of “red set” calls, they kept ACU in their own half.

Adam Vrahnos and “Tractor” Ferguson left a number of ACU forwards slow to get up with some brick wall defence.

Solid efforts in defence can be carried into the attack, Sydney University alumni Kazuki Fukushige did just that keeping ACU on the back foot, darting from hooker at timely moments.

With a worn down ACU defensive line it was tries all around as the Lions feasted on open holes. Felix Dean, playing his first game for the Lions, was one of the try scorers. Fellow Sydney University student Braeden Ferdinands also debuted on the weekend and showed hints of serious pace.

The annual City versus Country game takes place next Sunday in Mudgee where a number of Lions will represent Sydney University in the City side.

Congratulations and good luck to Elite Athlete scholar Marcus Pappas, alongside Lions captain Myles Fowler, Leon Fifita, Jade Ferguson, Daniel Rowe, Daniel Hicks, Aristoteli Taktikos and emergency reserve Max Linden-Smith who were selected with the Vrahnos brothers to take on Country.

While coach Luke Srama would like to keep the momentum going it’s a week off for the rest of the boys until Round 4, where the Sydney University Lions play at Ollie Webb Reserve against the Cumberland Beavers. Come down and help keep the Lions roaring at 3pm on Saturday, May 13.
