Sydney University Football Club is preparing to meet Siberian Federal University at Kamilqusa, Tokyo, tomorrow in their first pool match of the World University Rugby Invitational Tournament.
The tournament is being run in conjunction with the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan later this month.
SUFC will be competing against some of the best university rugby teams from each continent. Participating universities include Bordeaux University, New Zealand Universities, Oxford, Siberian Federal, University of British Columbia, University of Cape Town and Waseda University.
The World University Rugby Invitational began in 2015 at Oxford University, and occurs once every four years, coinciding with the Rugby World Cup. This is the first occasion an Australian team has taken part in the tournament.
The tournament officially started yesterday with the official Opening Ceremony. SUFC will start their tournament when they meet Kamilqusa at 2pm (local time) tomorrow. They’ll back up with two games on Friday – against Waseda University at 10am and against Oxford at 2pm.
The semi-finals will be played on 22 September, with the Grand Final on 23 September followed by the Closing Ceremony.
