Sydney University had eight players in the NSW women’s rugby squad that defeated ACT Brumbies 26-nil in the season opener at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.
Waratahs captain Ash Hewson, vice-captain Grace Hamilton, Tamsin Sheppard, Sera Naiqama, Emily Chancellor, Iliseva Batisbasaga were in the run-on XV, while Noella Green and Kirrily Laws started off the bench.
Chancellor, Naiqama and Green were making their NSW debuts. Hamilton scored two tries in the contest, Naiqama added one and Hewson finished with 3 conversions. The Waratahs women have a bye next round, followed by a home game against fellow 2018 Grand Finalst, Queensland, at Leichardt Oval on Sunday 10th March at 3pm.
Meanwhile, prop Harry Johnson-Holmes, halfback Jake Gordon, five-eighth Bernard Foley and fullback Israel Folau were in the starting XV for NSW in their nail-biting 31-20 win over the Sunwolves at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, Tokyo, on Saturday. Hooker Tolu Latu, prop Chris Talakai and lock Lachlan Swinton started off the bench. They Waratahs men also have a bye next round, but will be back in action at the SCG against Queensland on Saturday 9th March at 7:45pm.
Sydney University Football Club winger Matthew Hood has been named in the 13-man Australian Sevens squad for Round 4 of the men’s World Sevens Series, to be held in Las Vegas from 1-3 March.
The Series will move to Hong Kong and Singapore in April, London in May and finish off in Paris in June.
The Men’s 2018-19 World Sevens Series started in Cape Town on December 8-9, with Round 2 held in Hamilton on 26-27 January and Round 3 in Sydney on 2-3 February.
Matthew Hood made his World Rugby Sevens Series debut in the opening round of the 2017-18 series played in Dubai.
