A number of SUAC athletes recorded outstanding results across the globe over the weekend.
The World Relay Championships are currently being held in the Bahamas and Sydney University Athletic Club’s Josh Ralph won a bronze medal in the 4x800m. Ralph ran second leg in a strong Australian lineup that included Jordan Williamsz, Ryan Gregson and Jared West. The medal from Ralph was the first by a SUAC athlete at a World Championships.
Also at the World Relay Championships, Anneliese Rubie ran a stomping third leg in the womens 4x400m heat. The Australian girls qualified for the final which was made especially important as it meant the Australian women’s 4×400 team also qualified for the Rio Olympics. The girls finished seventh in the race.
At Stanford in the USA, SUAC had two athletes competing in the Payton Jordon Invitational. Commonwealth Games representative Emily Brichacek smashed the SUAC 5000m record running a time of 15.19 minutes. The time was also a qualifier for Brichacek for the World Championships which will be held in Beijing later in the year. James Nipperess ran the 3000m steeplechase at the same event, recording a time of 8.35 minutes to finish 2nd in his heat. The time for Nipperess was the fastest he has run first up and augers well for him as he will chase a World Championships qualifier in a week’s time.
Back in Sydney, Athletics NSW hosted the second leg of the Winter Premiership at Homebush with the running of the Sydney Ten, which is also the NSW 10km Road Championships. SUAC’s Brad Croker won the men’s race in a personal best time running 29.53. In the womens race Nat Archer also ran a personal best to finish 2nd in a time of 33.41.
