The Southern Design Sydney Uni Sparks put forward a gallant effort but were chased down by an experienced Kilsyth outfit at the weekend. Despite the Sparks leading at each of the breaks the Cobras stormed home to claim a 67-59 victory at Brydens Stadium.

The Sparks got off to a great start, bringing a lot of energy from the outset. Lockdown defence and free flowing offense meant they went into quarter time leading 21-9.

The second quarter was much more even, with the Cobras beginning to find their rhythm. However the young Sparks remained tough and executed their offence well, taking a 36-27 lead into half time.

The Cobras came out of half time with much more intensity, forcing the Sparks into a few turnovers early. The visiting side were able to capitalise on these errors and went on a run to take the lead early in the fourth. The young Sparks fought till the end but fell just short.

Maddie O’Hehir had a productive game for the Sparks leading the team with 13 points. Recently selected in the Opals team, Tahlia Tupaea had a good all round game with 12 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Lara McSpadden also finished in double figures with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sparks have a tough task ahead of them next as they face the ladder-leading Bendigo Braves at 6pm on Friday 22nd June at Bendigo Stadium. In their second game of the weekend, they take on the Ballarat Rush at 6pm on Saturday 23rd June at the Mars Minerdome.
