The Southern Design Sydney Uni Sparks have kept their finals hopes alive heading into the last round of the regular season, following their 77-75 victory over the Frankston Blues.

The game was neck and neck from the outset, with neither team holding more than an eight point lead throughout the game. However it was the Sparks who had the edge at half time, up 34-33.

The Blues took control in the third quarter and continued their run into the fourth. The visiting team held a seven point lead with four minutes remaining, but the young Sparks didn’t falter under pressure. They mounted a strong comeback trailing by just one point with nine seconds remaining. Off a baseline out of bounds play, the ball went to Emily Simons who connected a three pointer to put the Sparks in the lead. A strong defensive play from the Sparks on the last possession meant they held on to the two point victory.

The Sparks out-rebounded the visiting Blues, 49-38 and dished out 20 assists to the Blues 15. Emily Simons had a stand out performance finishing with 24 points (71% fg), Shanae Greaves had 16 points and 7 rebounds and Susannah Walmsley added 15 points (62% 3pt). Lara McSpadden was strong under the basket pulling in 12 rebounds.

With their season in the balance, the Sparks take on the Melbourne at 7pm on Friday 20 July at Brydens Stadium. They then head down to Sandringham to take on the Sabres at 5pm on Saturday 21 July at Sandringham Basketball Stadium.
