The Sydney Uni Sparks recorded their first home win of the season, with a 75-61 point win over the visiting Canberra Capitals Academy.

The Sydney Uni Sparks went ahead from the tip off, going on a 7-0 run to start the game, led by a couple of early baskets by Captain Shanae Greaves. The Sparks continued this form early on, shooting at a high percentage and ending the first quarter with a 28-21 point lead.

Defence tightened up at both ends in the second quarter with both teams turning the ball over a few too many times and scoring only 10 points apiece.

Coming out of half time the Sparks ignited, extending their lead to 11 points early on. But Canberra, led by Keely Froling, went on a run coming within 3 points of Sydney Uni in the third quarter. It was the young Sparks however, who kept their composure down the stretch, outscoring the visitors by 9 in the fourth quarter to come away victorious.

The Sparks were led by Susannah Walmsley posting 15 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds. Tahlia Tupaea further boosted the Sparks offence in her first game with the team recording 15 points and 5 rebounds. Young gun Kim Hodge showed her athleticism pulling down 10 boards to go with 8 points. Greaves finished in double figures with 10 points and Emily Mathews added 9 of her own shooting a perfect 3/3 beyond the arc.

The Sydney Uni Sparks will have a break over Easter. Their next home game will be played at Bryden’s Stadium on Friday 21st April at 7pm.
