Last week the National Selection Trials for the Australian Rowing Team concluded. Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC) had 12 athletes and 1 coach selected to represent Australia at the upcoming World Cups in Europe in June/July.

This is almost twice as many athletes as any other rowing club in Australia. This is an important year in the cycle, as the 2019 World Rowing Championships are the main Olympic qualification regatta for Tokyo 2020.

Representative include:

Cameron Girdlestone – Men’s Quad

Alexander Purnell – Men’s Quad

Campbell Watts – Men’s Double

David Bartholot – Men’s Reserve

Leon Chambers – Men’s Lightweight Double

Jack Hargreaves – Men’s Sweep

Jack O’Brien – Men’s Sweep

Nick Purnell – Men’s Sweep

Genevieve Horton – Women’s Double

Fiona Ewing – Women’s Quad

Rowena Meredith – Women’s Quad

Georgina Gotch – Women’s Sweep

Don McLachlan – Men’s Lightweight Double & Women’s Quad Coach

Additionally, Hamish Parry from QLD who has been training under our Head Coach Don at SUBC for the past 6 months has been selected to row the Men’s Lightweight Double Scull with Leon Chambers.

Another athlete who has been successful of late is James Talbot. He has been named in the PR3 squad to trial further in April for selection in the Para events for the Australian Team ahead of the FISA International Para Rowing Regatta in Gavirate and the 2019 World Rowing Championships.

This is a fantastic result for the club and a testament to the strong development of each of our athletes.  It has to be a record in terms of representation on the Australian Rowing Team.

There are also upcoming trials in April for the Australian Under-21 Trans-Tasman, Junior World Championship, and Under-23 World Championship teams, for which we have several prospects.
