Centuries from Ben Trevor-Jones and Damien Mortimer and a tantalising 96 from James Larkin set Sydney University up for maximum points in their Round 2 match against Blacktown on Saturday.

The Students declared at 2-394 and had the visitors teetering at 2-19 at stumps on day one of the two-day Sydney Premier grade fixture at Sydney University Oval.

Trevor-Jones posted 144, No.3 Mortimer remained unbeaten on 107 and Larkin, filling in for his brother Nick, who is out with a broken hand, finished a boundary short of his maiden First Grade century.

Having won the toss and batted, Sydney University openers Trevor-Jones and Larkin set the scene for a big score with a 173-run stand before Larkin was bowled by Gabriel Joseph after a 142-ball stay. It was the third time he’s been dismissed for 96 in his eighth season with the club.

The patient Trevor-Jones and Mortimer put on a 150-run first wicket stand before the opener departed with a maiden First Grade century under his belt. He faced 225 balls in a five-hour occupation.

Mortimer went on to score his third First Grade century while sharing a 71-run stand with stand-in skipper Liam Robertson, who declared the innings closed to allow seven overs at Blacktown before stumps.

Tim Ley struck twice in his four overs, claiming openers Nathan Hinton (lbw) and Mitchell Hinds (bowled) to have the visitors 2-19 at stumps and a tough day at the office next Saturday.

The same can be said for Sydney University Second Grade, who finished the day at 5-96 in reply to Blacktown’s 156 at  Joe McAleer Oval.

The Students will be relying on Ed Arnott (27 not out) and Jonathon Craig Dobson (23 not out) to reel in the 60-run deficit.

Sydney University Thirds are in a better position at Camperdown Oval, finishing the day at 1-91 in reply to Blacktown’s first innings of 197. Lewis McMahon was the star of the day, finishing with 5-61 off his 18 overs for the Students.

Sydney University Fourths batted out the day to be 9-226 at stumps, with Alasdair Grant (62), Brayden Dilley (59) and Liam McElduff (34) all giving the willow a workout; while Fifths have Blacktown 3-7 after posting 233 in their first innings at St Paul’s College Oval.
