Students claim two gold, four silver and one bronze at EUGs
The University of Sydney's Mixed Netball and Ultimate Frisbee teams are celebrating gold medal wins following victories at this week's Eastern University Games finals in Newcastle.
In the Ultimate Frisbee final, Sydney Uni edged out local rivals the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), 12-7, to win the gold. The team remained undefeated over four days of competition, averaging 16-points per game.
Also undefeated at the Games, Sydney Uni's Mixed Netball team defeated hosts the University of Newcastle (UON) by 18-points to claim the gold. The final score was 47-29.
Mixed Netball and Mixed Ultimate were among seven Sydney University teams who won medals at the Games, with Women's Futsal, Men's Basketball and both Men's and Women's 3x3 Basketball bringing home the silver.
After defeating the Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE) in the quarter final, 9-1, and Australian Catholic University (ACU), 4-2, in the semi, Sydney Uni's Women's Futsal team were well-placed heading into yesterday Grand Final however fell to UTS by a narrow 5-2, claiming silver.
Sydney Uni's Men's Basketball won an exhilarating semi final match against the University of Wollongong, with the game forced into over time at 77 a piece. Sydney Uni managed to pile 14-points on Wollongong to win 91-83. In their gold medal game, the team faced a strong University of New South Wales (UNSW) side. Despite a point-by-point game, a last minute foul saw UNSW claim a 60-57 victory. The rivals will again face off at the Australian University Games in August.

Sydney Uni won one bronze medal at the Games with Women's Basketball securing the third-place finish. The team fell to UTS in their first semi, 74-50, but went on to defeat Western Sydney in the bronze medal match, 73-57.
After a series of playoff matches, Men's Futsal finished 5th, Mixed Touch Football finished 6th and Women's Netball finished 6th.
Sydney Uni sent a total of 96 students to the games which spanned across four days and involved over 3,000 students across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
Hosts the University of Newcastle were named the 2017 Eastern University Games' Overall Champions.
