Sydney University collected a bonus point when they took just 37 overs to chase down the 172 set by Manly-Warringah in their 50-over fixture played at Manly Oval on Sunday.
The Students finished with 5-176 but they had to overcome a shaky start with both openers departing early. Greg Mail was bowled by Andrew Lindsay for a duck and Ed Cowan was run out for 21 leaving the visitors 2-31.
But Ian Moran and Will Hay took up the cudgels in a 51-run partnership before Moran fell for 33.
Hay then combined in a 71-run partnership with 18-year-old Dave Miller, making his First Grade debut, to put the result within reach. He was out for 59, caught by Jamie Sullivan off Luke Edgell, leaving the Students 5-169.
Miller (24 not out) and Matthew Morgan (five not out) steered the Students home.
Earlier, Nick Dunford bowled 10 miserly overs to finish with 4-26 as Manly-Warringah struggled to put together an imposing target.
They also got off to a shaky start and were 2-0 after Ian Moran had Andrew Jeffrey caught at slip by Mail in the first over and Dunford clean-bowled Sullivan in the second over.
Dunford also had Jamie Cox caught behind by Morgan for 27, Luke Edgell caught by Moran for 16 and Ryan Bulger caught by Cowan for 11.
It was left to No.10 James Munting to help Manly-Warringah finish with a competitive target. He top-scored with 41 and was out on the last ball of the innings when Tim Ley snared the catch off all-rounder Miller.
It was a busy weekend for First Grade, who also began a two-match against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park on Saturday. The match will continue next Saturday.
Wicketkeeper Matthew Morgan continued his good form in his first season with the club to top-score with 65. Will Hay (62), Mark Faraday (40) and Nick Dunford (25) also made solid contributions as Sydney University declared at 9-240, giving them 12 overs at Wests before stumps.
But openers Nick Compton (21) and Shariful Islam (11) remained unbeaten as the hosts finished the day at 0-31.
