Good Friday saw the rematch between Sydney University and the Warringah Rats. Unfortunately the tough, gallant rodents from the northern beaches could not register on the scoreboard and were defeated by a red hot Students fifteen by 50-0.

Thirty seconds after the kickoff had barely elapsed when the blindside was exploited by University. Halfback Banjo Travers nipped down the blindside with lightning speed and linked with Captain and outside centre Guy Porter who touched down.

University had that swagger in their step and soon after second rower big Jack Sherratt finished off a pick and drive sequence to crash over. With an added conversion by 2018 Uzbekistan Academy Award best actor fullback James Kane, the Students were ahead 12-0 after ten minutes of play.

The fun did not stop and University’s signature set piece rolling maul from a lineout produced a try and a classic in and away sequence from Kane and winger Harry Potter saw Porter score his double. University went into the sheds with a nice lead of 24-0 and a bonus point up their sleeve.

University looked sharp. Warringah were trying hard but some bone crushing University defence stifled any attacking moves from the green rats.

The second half did not show any respite by University as a five metre lineout saw University register another try. A penalty try for a scrum breach saw University’s score balloon to 36-0. The game was half way through the second half and fresh reserves were introduced to create added impetus.

The Students really started to display some exhuberance. Young winger James Armstrong gifted with incredible speed took off down the open but linked with replacement prop with the name straight out of the cast of the Bold and the Beautiful – Jay Spencer. Spencer took the ball at speed. On one of the calendars most holiest of days Spencer appeared to have a Moses like persona and part the Warringah defence like the Red Sea in the Ten Commandments to score under the posts on his debut in the top Grade.

The ball was zipping everywhere and a blindside rush saw replacement winger Nathaniel Tamwoy score the final try for a 50-0 victory.

Warringah were hurting but will no doubt regroup and be a thorn to other teams throughout the season.

For University there was no hiding of their elation after the game.  Replacement hooker Pat O’Doherty true to his Irish heritage kissing a blow up of the Blarney Stone given to him by his mother Margaret and father Kevin was just absorbing what it means playing at University. “It’s good to be with the boys and I’m loving playing with the Waratahs in this team.”

Head Coach, Robert Taylor could not fault his troops. “ A high scoring win built on clinical defence.”, said Taylor.

Next Saturday for a change of scenery University will have an arm wrestle against traditional rivals Eastwood at that jewell of the Central West, Mudgee.
