Sydney University have claimed their spot at the top of the NEAFL ladder, following their 13.10(88)-6.19(55) victory over the previously unbeaten Southport Sharks in round four.

In tough, windy conditions at Henson Park, it was the Students who went on the first big run. They piled on a quick four goals late in the first, to take a 16 point lead into quarter time.

With the change of ends at quarter time, Southport took advantage of the wind howling behind them, peppering the goal early in the second quarter.

Despite the Students inability to kick a major in the second, the inaccuracy of the Sharks in front of goal allowed the home side to maintain a two point lead at half time.

There was a clear momentum shift after the main break as Sydney Uni dominated the third quarter kicking four goals in the first 10 minutes. The Students continued to apply pressure and ended the period kicking six goals to Southport’s one.

Despite coming home with the wind, the visitor’s woes continued, starting the fourth quarter with five behinds. Sydney Uni’s tough defensive line were able to absorb any pressure Southport mustered up, propelling the home side to a 33 point victory.

In his debut for the Students, former AFL premiership player, Craig Bird, was dominant around the ball finishing with 28 disposals and eight marks.

The Students have a well-deserved rest in round five, before taking on the Canberra Demons at 12pm on Saturday 13th May at Blacktown International Sportspark.
