Sydney Uni have kicked off their 2019 Aon Uni 7s campaign with a podium finish in Brisbane, taking home the bronze medal to put them in good stead for the remaining three rounds.

On Saturday, the Students won all three of their pool games, opening up the account with a clinical 29-0 vicory over University of Adelaide and backed up by a scinitillating 43-5 triumph over University of Melbourne.

They finished the day off with a 21-12 win against Bond University to wrap up a successful first hit-out, regrouping at the team hotel before the business end of the round.

Sydney Uni were handed a reality check by reigning champions Griffith University in their final pool game on Sunday, going down 19-10 to see them finish second in their group.

It meant they drew home-town favourites University of Queensland in what was a hotly-contested battle, with their opposition narrowly coming out on top in a 10-5 battle.

The loss sent them to the bronze medal match, again meeting Griffith University.

But Sydney Uni wouldn’t make the same mistake, displaying a new sense of energy and cohesion to topple the reigning champions 24-0 in a turnaround that should spill confidence into the next round.

University of Queensland took out the round one title with a 21-17 win against UTS.

The girls will enjoy two weeks of recovery, rest and training ahead of round two at Bond University on September 28.
