Sydney University failed to break their Granville hoodoo on Saturday night, going down 2-1 at home to the Rage in the second round of the NSW Super League.

Having lost both meetings between the sides last year, Uni looked on track to buck the trend when they were awarded penalty within the first minute of the match, which was duly converted by Daine Merrin to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Granville equalized through Fred Umlil after 34 minutes, on the back of a brilliant team passing maneuver, and just five minutes later a goal to Nenos Bobo left the Students 2-1 behind going into the break at Hensley Athletic Field.

Neither side could add to their goal tally in the second half, allowing Granville to secure their first victory of the season and leaving Uni ninth on the 12 team ladder with one point from their two matches so far.

Things don’t get any easier for the Students as they travel to Bonnyrigg next week to take on the defending champions. Held to two draws so far this season, the White Eagles will be hungry for victory over a young Uni side. The clash on Saturday night at Bonnyrigg Sports Club marks a great opportunity for Uni to announce themselves as finals contenders, and will kick off at 7:30pm.

The news wasn’t any better for the Women’s Premier League Uni side, who went down 2-0 to the Sutherland Sharks in their round two encounter.
