Sydney University currently sit in a deadlock, in equal first (fourth place on for and against) position on the North East Australian Football League ladder. After a strong start to the season, winning eight on the trot, the Students had a rough patch in the middle before regaining momentum towards the business end of the season.

In the penultimate round of the regular season, Sydney Uni took on an in form Canberra Demons at the weekend. The Students were on the front foot early, getting out to a 15 point lead at quarter time. They extended the lead to 22 at the half, before Canberra made a run in the third term to cut Uni’s lead to a manageable 20 points.

A strong fourth quarter from Sydney University saw them kick two goals early and extend their lead to 30. From that point on were never threatened by the visiting Demons and claimed a 17.19 (121) to 11.8 (74) victory.

Sydney University midfielder Craig Bird was outstanding in the match, rewriting the NEAFL record books with 20 clearances, beating the previous record of 17. He also amassed 38 disposals and 10 inside 50s.

Will Sierakowksi also had a great outing in his newfound attacking role this season, finishing with 31 disposals, nine clearances, 12 inside 50s (two shy of the all-time record) and a goal.

Sydney Uni had many targets up front , with 11 players featuring on the scoresheet. Tristan Davies and Jake Derrickx were particularly effective with three goals apiece. 

The Students will look to maintain their strong form when they play their last game of the regular season against the NT Thunder at 12pm on Saturday 25th August at Blacktown International Sportspark.
