12.10.2008 – Graham Croker

Sydney University suffered their first defeat of the season when Mosman prevailed by 48 runs in a limited-overs fixture at University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

Having won the toss and batted, the visitors ran up 9-182 off 50 overs, thanks to good contributions from Jason Vero (52), Jason Ryan (32) and Damien Naughton (28).

Tight bowling from Ian Moran (3-48), Marty Paskal (2-34) and Greg Matthews (2-18) kept the score to an achievable target, given the batting displays from Sydney University in the first two rounds of the Sydney Grade competition.

But the Students slumped to 5-30 – with two run-outs – before wicketkeeper Matthew Morgan steadied the ship with 55 off 102 balls, including three boundaries and a six.

However, his contribution was not enough and the hosts were all out for 134 off 44.3 overs, with Sam Roberts (3-17), Cameron Eve (2-16) and Christopher Payne (2-16) taking the bowling honours for Mosman.

The news was better in the lower grades, with Sydney University winning Seconds, Thirds, Fourths, Fifths and Sixths to sit in second place behind Penrith on the Club Championship after three rounds.

Meanwhile, SUCC has Stuart Clark helping to lead the Australian bowling attack in the Test series in India, while Mark Cameron and Greg Mail are on duty for NSW in the Sheffield Shield fixture against Western Australia in Perth.
