Sydney University’s seven representatives in Australian crews at the World University Rowing Championships, held in Belgrade at the weekend, each made it to B finals but missed out on the medals.

Australian team captain Dominic Grimm, Sydney University Sports Scholarships holder James Harding, and Ry Kehlet teamed up with University of Melbourne’s James Adams in the men’s four. After finishing fourth in the repechage round in 6:26.455, they improved on that time to finish fourth in B Final and 10th overall.

Sydney University Spots Scholarships holders Natasha Bolsin and Alisa Tremayne partnered Georgina Harvey and Emy Huntsman from the University of Melbourne in the women’s four. They narrowly missed out on the last spot in A Final, but improved on their qualifying time by almost two seconds, finishing second in B Final and eighth overall in 7:08.527.

Emma Costello and Chloe Regan, both Sydney University Sports Scholarships holders, competed in the women’s double sculls, where they were coached by Sydney University Boat Club’s Alan Bennett.

They finished third in the repechage round and just missed out on a position in Final A. They couldn’t repeat their impressive heat times in B Final, however, finishing fifth to be 11th overall.

The regatta, which attracted 400 athletes from 27 countries, was held in the sweltering heat, with temperatures reaching as high as 38C.

Australia was represented in five events and qualified for the final in the men’s double sculls, where they finished 5th. Poland was the most successful country at the regatta, with finalists in 12 of 13 events and the only team to field a crew in every event.
