A six from Sydney University No.11 Ben Joy secured the Students first innings points in a run-laden clash with Manly-Warringah at University Oval on Saturday.

In a match that started with a golden duck and then produced 923 runs for the loss of 15 wickets, it came down to Joy’s one hit from three balls faced to end the dramatic two-day contest.

Having won the toss and batted, Manly-Warringah were 1-0 when Logan Weston departed first ball. He then watched ruefully for the rest of the day as the visitors declared at a mammoth 6-461, thanks largely to 165 from 19-year-old Oliver Davies and an unbeaten 126 from Ryan Farrell – his first century in just his third top grade outing.

The pair shared a 151-run, sixth-wicket partnership, with Davies cracking 14 boundaries and seven over the fence in his 174-ball stay.

Sydney University ended day one on 0-29 with the task in front of them. While there were no century-makers they had plenty of contributors in reaching 9-456 before Joy came to the crease.

Opener Ryan McElduff top-scored with 81, while skipper Liam Robertson (80), ‘keeper Tim Cummins (60), Ben Trevor-Jones (49), Hayden Kerr (48), Dugald Holloway (48), Nick Larkin (46) and No.10 Charlie Cassell (20 not out) kept the contest alive for the big finish.

For the record, the 490 runs were the most in a single day in the Premier Grade competition since Sutherland posted 6-500 in the 2006-07 season, when former Test opener Phil Jacques cut loose with 321.

Sydney University backed up on Sunday to account for Campbelltown-Camden by 32 runs in their Round 3 Twenty20 match at University Oval.

The hosts scored 8-162 Liam Robertson (43), Ed Cowan (37), Ben Trevor-Jones (28 not out) and David Miller (21) the main contributors, while Tanveer Sangha collected 3-29.

David Miller (3-19) and Dugald Holloway (2-13) then helped dismiss Campbelltown-Camden for 130 off 19 overs with Harry Swindells (30), Aaron Yabsley (27) and Jarrad Burke (20) the best of the willow wielders.

Sydney University will meet UTS North Sydney in a two-day, Round 4 match at University Oval starting this Saturday.
