The Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) have hit the lead in the Open Pennant after the third round of the Treloar Shield, edging in front of rivals UTS North’s.

The highlight of the weekend’s round, held at ES Marks Athletics Track in Moore Park, came from the men’s 4x100m relay team, who recorded the fastest ever race time (39.96) in a NSW club competition and the fastest time in the country by any club team this year.

The team of Justin Merlino, Jin Jung (Bachelor of Commerce/Laws), Nick Hough (Bachelor of Information Technology/Laws) and Jarrod Geddes (Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science) will next contest the 4x100m at the NSW State Relay Championships, where they will attempt to break the NSW record. Jung, Hough and Geddes are all SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holders and University of Sydney students.

Other highlights on the weekend came from Jung, who recorded a fast 100m to take victory in the men’s race, while Justin Merlino finished second in the men’s 200m.

SUSF EAP scholarship holder Jenny Blundell (Bachelor of Exercise Physiology) ran the fastest women’s 1500m, while teammate and fellow scholarship holder Nat Archer (Bachelor of Science) finished second thanks to a personal best time. Rosie Weber also slashed her personal best, finishing not too far behind.

Hugh Williams (Bachelor of Physiotherapy) was third in the men’s 1500m. In the women’s 800m Jo Cubis stormed home in second place.

The next big social event on the SUAC calendar will be the SUAC 135th dinner held on November 23 at Wesley College form 6pm. Tickets can still be purchased and all welcome. See www.suac.org to download an invite or email [email protected].
