A number of Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC) athletes have helped Australia to three of five medals won at the World Rowing Cup lll in Lucerne, Switzerland over the weekend. 

Australia took home Gold in the Women’s Four and Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull, Silver in the Men’s Eight and Men’s Coxed Pair, and Bronze in the Women’s Quadruple Scull.

Sydney University Boat Club athletes contributed to the national team’s Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull (Georgia Miansarow), Women’s Quadruple Scull (Gen Horton and Rowena Meredith), Men’s Eight (Alex Purnell and Jack Hargreaves) and Men’s Four (Campbell Watts).

Georgia Miansarow of SUBC joined Amy James, Alice Arch and Georgia Nesbitt in the A-Final of the Lightweight Women’s Quad to take out first place.

In addition to securing the country’s first gold of the regatta, they set a new World Cup Best Time of 06:26.320.

The Men’s Eight (Angus Moore, Joshua Hicks, Hamish Playfair, Timothy Masters, Spencer Turner, Alexander Hill, James Rook and SUBC’s Alex Purnell and Jack Hargreaves) claimed silver, with race favourites Germany narrowly edging out the Australian crew to take the gold.

The Women’s Quadruple Scull of Leah Saunders, Caitlin Cronin and SUBC’s Genevieve Horton and Rowena Meredith picked up a bronze medal.

Finishing fifth in their B-Final were the Men’s Four Darcy Wruck, Simon Keenan, Angus Widdicombe and SUBC’s Campbell Watts.

Other medal winning crews included Australia’s Women’s Four (Molly Goodman, Sarah Hawe, Katrina Werry and Lucy Stephan) who won gold and the Men’s Coxed Pair (Ben Coombs, Nathan Bowden and James Rook) who claimed silver. 

Australia placed second on the medal table, alongside Italy and Poland, winning two gold, two silver and one bronze medal, with New Zealand taking first place with a total of seven medals (six gold and one silver).
