In what proved to be one of the fastest 50 meter freestyle races in history, Sydney University’s Jono Newton collected a bronze medal swimming 22.15 behind dual Olympian Ashley Callus and new world recold holder Eamon Sullivan.
Newton’s Sydney University coach Steve Alderman was blown away by the speed of the race. Commenting on the swim, Alderman said “at the 45 meter mark, I thought he had it”. Newton’s swim ranks in the top 10 in the world, however he will miss the Beijing Olympic Team as the Australian selection criteria only accepts the first two place getters.
Sydney University’s other star performer Matt Jaukovic placed 6th in the 100m Butterfly in a personal best time of 53.13 and finished a creditable 8th in the 50m Butterfly swimming 24.41. Jaukovic’s 100m Butterfly time was well under the Olympic “B” standard of 54.74.
Sydney University Sport & Fitness scholarship holders Kate Johnson and Anthony Fine reached the Semi Finals. Kate competed in the 50 and 200 Butterfly finishing 16th and 10th. While Anthony competed in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke finishing 12th and 15th.
Other Sydney University members who made it through to the semi finals included Alistiare Pickles (200 breaststroke) and David Schnabl (100 backstroke)
Sydney University coach Steve Alderman said “he was very proud of the efforts of his swimmers” and added “the hard work they have put in over the last 12 months has certainly paid off this week”.
