Sydney Uni Boxing Club’s Patron and legendary Australian boxing trainer, Johnny Lewis, has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame 2017.

Lewis is best known for working with 6 world champions including Kostya Tszyu and Jeff Fenech.  Lewis is one of Australia’s most successful boxing trainers and in 2006 was inducted into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame and in the same year was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to boxing and rugby league in the Australia Day honours list.

Johnny has had many extraordinary journeys with his boxers on their path to success. In 1981 Lewis began training Jeff Fenech on a pathway which took Fenech from street to champion. Within eight years Fenech had become the most successful fighter in Australian history, winning three world titles while still undefeated and knocking out the Olympic gold medallist Steve McCrory while building a legendary following Australia.

Fenech’s success brought other champions to Lewis, first Jeff Harding who won the world light-heavyweight title in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1989 and then Kostya Tszyu who dominated the junior-welterweight division for a decade.

Also inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame for 2017 are legendary champions Evander Holyfield, who twice beat Mike Tyson, and Marco Antonio Barrera, who beat Aussie super-featherweight and dual Olympian Robbie Peden.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Canastota, New York, in June 2017.
