Sydney University secured a sixth-place finish at the University World Cup in Jinjiang, China, proving to be a lethal threat against the world’s best universities at the inaugural tournament.

Their two-week campaign started with a bang, running riot over Switzerland’s University of Lausanne in a 12-0 demolition as eight players found the back of the net in an entertaining spectacle.

The crowd packed in for their second game against the home nation’s Beijing Normal University and the noise only got louder when their opposition opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

The game hung in the balance until Beijing widened the margin in the 83rd minute and 87th minute to walk away 3-0 winners, leaving Sydney Uni in a must-win situation for their final pool game against Brazil’s Paulista University.

That game followed a similar script with eventual grand finalists Paulista opening the scoring early before putting the game to bed with three goals in the second half.

Sydney Uni found themselves up against China’s Donghua University in the fifth-place playoff and trailed 1-0 before Stephanie Ambrose equalised a few minutes after their opposition scored.

But the penalty shoot-out didn’t go in their favour, going down 4-2 in a disappointing end to what was an exciting campaign.

Congratulations to all athletes on their efforts and for proudly representing the Sydney University colours!
