Sydney University staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the East Coast Eagles by six points at University Oval No.1 on Saturday afternoon and storm to the top of the Sydney AFL Premier Division ladder.

Uni are now the only undefeated side in the league after three rounds, and in wet conditions fought hard to snatch an 18.20-128 to 19.8-122 victory.

Having lost both matches to archrivals the Eagles by a goal or less last year, Uni exacted revenge to record a classic victory after trailing at every change in the match.

In a high scoring goal feast, East Coast exploded out of the blocks in the opening term, kicking an intimidatingly accurate 8.1 to have a handy 16 point lead at quarter time, 48-33.

Uni’s inaccuracy in front of goal cost them in the second quarter, with the Students failing to capitalize on having eleven scoring shots for the term to the Eagles eight. Uni kicked 4.7 for the term against East Coast’s 5.3, and trailed by 18 points at halftime, 9.10-64 to 13.4-82.

The sides went goal for goal and behind for behind in the third term, with the margin unchanged at three-quarter time as the Eagles led 16.7-103 to 12.13-85.

For the second week running, however, Uni saved their best quarter until last. The Students had an incredible 13 scoring shots to four, and booted six goals to three to stun the Eagles and show why they are now the team to beat in 2008.

Alexander Lee kicked four goals for the Students to take his season tally to 10 from just three matches, whilst Brydon Coles also kicked four and Benjamin Mankarious two.

For the Eagles Benjamin Rogers kicked four goals, whilst Gus Seebeck, Adam Floyd, Ryan Smith and Mark Maher all nabbed three a piece.

Best on ground for the Students were Lee and Coles, alongside strong performances from Mark Egan and Chris McLaughlin. Eagles coach Glenn Garner was the best of the East Coast side.

Sydney Uni will look to make it four from four this weekend as they travel to Monarch Oval to take on 6th placed Campbelltown, who defeated Balmain by 6 points last weekend.
