Sydney University’s tennis program was nominated for the 2010 Coaching Excellence MLC Hot Shots’ award  presented at the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards last week.

The Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards are the first of their kind for Australian tennis and will be tennis’s equivalent of the AFL Brownlow night or the NRL Dally M awards.

The night has been created as an opportunity for the Australian tennis community to recognise the outstanding performers of the year, both at elite and grassroots level.

John Curzon, Director of Sydney University Tennis, says the success Sydney University Tennis Program achieved this year was clearly not by accident.

“The success of the program has been a result of our structural changes for the 2010 program using the suitable zoned areas, appropriate equipment and a competency based teaching approach,” Mr Curzon said.

The program’s list of achievements for 2010 includes:

  • Current Tennis Australia MLC Hot Shots Ambassador
  • 400 juniors this year have been exposed to Tennis Hot Shots at local schools by the coaching team during our ‘demo’s’
  • 8 Hot Shot Challenges this year – 200 juniors competing
  • Current Term – 105 Hot Shots participants with enrolments doubled from the same time last year
  • 90% retention rate of juniors staying in program

“None of this could have been achieved without the dedicated team of Casey Cross, Elio Latella, Brian Ly, Rob Ho & Lionel Won,” Mr Curzon said.

“They have all done a great job this year.”

There will also be 11 additional awards that will be presented on the night, including the John Newcombe Medal for the best player of 2010.

Nominees for the top award include Jarmila Groth, Lleyton Hewitt, Anastasia Rodionova and Sam Stosur.
