Sydney Uni have won their first ever round at the Aon Uni 7s tournament, toppling ladder leaders University of Queensland 19-5 in the final to set up a thrilling finish to the competition.

The team went through the tournament undefeated, kicking off their campaign with a 24-0 win over hosts University of Adelaide, before working their way through University of Western Australia, Griffith University and University of Melbourne in the pool stage.

They had their hands full in the semi-final, narrowly beating University of Canberra 24-17 to book their place in the final where they took business of competition heavyweights University of Queensland.

To win the series, Sydney Uni need to take home gold again in Canberra in round four, while University of Queensland must miss out on a top four finish. They can tie the tournament if they win and UQ finish fourth, but any higher placing for the first-placed team would dash all hope for Sydney Uni.

Captain Olivia White told rugby.com.au that it was an all-round team effort.

“We went through undefeated which I think speaks to the quality and depth of our team,” White said.

“We’ve got some fantastic skill with Jakiya Whitfield, one of our young, up and coming talents, we’ve got some Wallaroos players, which we’re very lucky to have.

“But I think those young girls that don’t really have a name to them stood up and played a pivotal role in our team. We’re a team of 12.”

Sydney Uni currently sit equal-second with Griffith University on 50 points, while University of Queensland lead the way on 56.

A round victory is worth 20 points, while second earns 18 points, third earns 16 points and so on.
