Sydney University faced competition debutants, Randwick Magic in the Jack Scott Grand Final at Pittwater Rugby Park on Saturday. The students finished their second undefeated season on top securing the win 34-3.

The heavy conditions did not hinder the intensity of the match as both teams fought at every ruck to retain the ball. In the 16th minute, Randwick put 3 points on the board through a penalty kick and at half-time the students led 15-3.

Despite the unrelenting effort of Randwick, the students continued to persevere through the strong go-forward of young front rowers Tisera Volkman and Bridie O’Gorman who scored tries in the latter part of the match. This with the trusted boot of captain Ash Hewson, gave the students an unassailable lead.

This is the 4th time in the last 5 years the students have won the Jack Scott Cup. Between the men’s and women’s programs, the Rugby Club has won 5 out of 6 grand finals in the last 2 weeks, which also means 5 out of 8 teams won their grand final overall.

A special mention to Ash Hewson who announced her retirement after the match. The veteran has an extensive rugby CV including captaincy of the Australian Wallaroos, NSW Waratahs and over 10 years in the blue and gold. A true legend of the game.

Congratulations to the Women’s team on yet another stellar season!
