The University of Sydney has notched its best result yet at the 2018 Aon Uni 7s series, finishing second to Griffith University in Round 4 at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

The silver medal is an outstanding result that follows a fourth place finish in Round 1, ninth place in Round 2 and fourth again in Round 3; a reward for the team after months of hard work.

The Students Round 4 campaign started with a thumping win over the University of Canberra, scoring six tries (plus six conversions) to their two to win 42-12.

Iliseva Batibasaga begun the scoring in the opening minute, followed by Jakiya Whitfeld, Sydney Gregson, Olivia White, Olivia Patterson and Kim Davey.

Their second win of the day came against the University of Tasmania, 34-12, followed by a close loss to ultimate champions, Griffith University, 20-17.

On Day 2, the Students drew against hosts, Bond University, 12-12, before being promoted to the semi to take on Macquarie University.

Again scoring in the opening minute, the Students were too good for Macquarie, claiming a 15-7 victory to progress to the gold medal match against Griffith University.

Despite a 31-0 scoreline in the final game of the tournament, the game was extremely competitive and physical; a 10-minute opening half the proof of this.

The Students went to the break trailing by only 7, but were unable to crack Griffith’s defence and get across the try-line.

Nonetheless, the dissapointing loss led to the team taking silver ahead of last year’s champions, the University of Queensland who finished fourth, and Macqaurie University who came in third.

Congratulations to the girls on an incredible result.

The final round of the series will be held in two weeks at the University of Adelaide from 20-21 October.
