Former Sydney University all-rounder Sean Abbott came back to haunt his old club at the weekend, claiming four wickets in Parramatta’s first innings win at Old Kings Oval.

Abbott came on as a sixth change trundler to collect 4-64 from 15 overs, including the key wicket of Sydney University skipper Nick Larkin.

Chasing Parramatta’s first day tally of 313, the Students resumed at 1-12, with opener Ben Trevor-Jones already in the sheds.

The Students lost Larkin (6) and Ed Cowan (17) to be 3-64 before Hayden Kerr (82), Damien Mortimer (46) and Liam Robertson (41) kept the Students in the hunt.

But when the consistent Robertson was trapped lbw with the score on 224, Parramatta went for the kill.

Sydney University lost four wickets without addition to be all out for 238. Ben Martin (3-56) and Scott Copperfield (2-24) shared the spoils with Abbott.

The loss resulted in Sydney University, the defending premiers, dropping to fourth on the Belvidere Cup competition ladder.

Sutherland head the ladder on 89 points after 11 rounds, with Parramatta (46), Campbelltown-Camden (45), Sydney University (43), Sydney (40) and Bankstown (39) making up the top six.

Sydney University also dropped to fifth on the Club Championship ladder which is headed by Parramatta on 1092 points, with Manly-Warringah (1070), Sydney (1015), Northern District (946) and the Students (915) in pursuit.

Round 12 of the competition will be another two-day round, with Sydney University up against North Sydney at Sydney University Oval on 3-4 February.

While Saturday’s result was disappointing, Sydney University returned to the fray on Sunday to defeat Sydney in their First Grade Limited Overs competition quarter-final at Drummoyne Oval.

After winning the toss and taking first use of the wicket, Daniel Mortimer (64), Liam Robertson (56 and 500 runs for the season), Nick Larkin (46), Hayden Kerr (32) and Steven Hobson (30) helped the Students to 282 off their 50 overs. Nicholas Bills (4-61) and Harry Manenti (3-41) shared the spoils for Sydney.

The Students then restricted the hosts to 170 off 36.4 overs, with leg-spinner Devlin Malone (4-46) and Tim Ley (3-32) causing the damage.

Harry Dalton (50), Beau McClintock (34), Ben Manenti (27) and Anthony Mosca (25) all made promising contributions but to no avail.

Sydney University will now meet Bankstown at Bankstown Memorial Oval in one semi-final of the Limited Overs competition, with Parramatta and Eastern Suburbs meeting in the other semi-final.
