Having been narrowly edged out of a gold medal by Canadian legend Alexandre Despatie in the 1m springboard, Mitcham yesterday teamed up with Ethan Warren in the 10m synchronised platform and the 3m synchronised springboard.
Having fallen behind early in the 10m synchronised platform event, Mitcham and Warren fought back in the latter rounds against the English pairing of Tom Daley and Max Brick (439.65), to finish in second position (423.81).
All attention quickly turned to Mitcham’s third event of the program, and the Aussies began well. However, they were reeled in and eventually relegated to second position (424.47) by the Canadian pairing of Alexandre Despatie and Ross Reuben (430.35).
Far from feeling dejected at coming so close to gold at the Games, Mitcham, a Sydney University Elite Athlete Program member who is currently in his second year of a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree, has remained incredibly mentally strong. “I’m really happy that I have another one (silver medal),” he said.
Mitcham will be hoping to bag his first Commonwealth Games gold in today’s 10m platform final, in which he will start favourite.
